JUNE 2014 FIRST FRIDAY - ACHILLES MARCUS GONZALEZ & MONIKA DEWITT

Once upon a time a brother and sister grew up together in old El Paso.  Achilles and Monika come from generations of art photographers and played at the feet of their grandfather in his studio.  They played competitively as siblings often do which grew into competition in art asthey grew older.  Achilles (Key) is the professional photographer living in Seattle, while Monika uses her creative side to embellish his art in unique ways at her home in Denver.  She spurs his creativeness with her spicy, somewhat crazy spirit, while he is a master of shadow and perspective with views and lines that are unexpected.  Rivalry, yes indeed;, but a wholly fecund, constructive rivalry that is showcased in their art.

MAY2014 FIRST FRIDAY - DAN SHANNON & KATHLEEN SHANNON HINER

Dan Shannon and Kathleen Shannon Hiner, brother and sister, have been competing artistically since they could hold a crayon in their hands! Although the siblings have had different journeys in art, both are drawn to painting the figure with dramatic color in a realistic yet expressive manner.  Both are also in a position in their lives to focus on their art and thought it fitting to share their collective journey in an exhibit together.

Dan Shannon is an expressive painter working on large canvases in oils and acrylics.  He finds his motivation interpreting celebrities – legendary movie figures, sports heroes, and musicians.  He finds it challenging to portray and capture the essence of their personality and movements in a way that is familiar, yet fresh to the viewer.  Due to an issue with color blindness, his earlier paintings were done in black and white, but over time he learned to adapt to color using special lighting and unconventional colors, giving his paintings a unique, vibrant feel.

His most recent paintings include legendary rock stars such as Eddie Van Halen, which was commissioned as an ad campaign for the rock radio station 107.5 The Bone in San Francisco. He works for private commissions as well, and currently is finishing 8 paintings of The Eagles for a private collector.

Dan is a Colorado native who studied art at Metro State College of Denver.  He has been creating art since he was in high school, where one of his watercolors was awarded a place in the White House in a competition.  Besides his paintings he has painted several murals and signs for Casa Bonita and other restaurants.

You can find Dan’s work on his website danshannonart.com, Dan Shannon Art on Facebook, and/or email him at broncodan63@gmail.com

Kathleen Shannon Hiner’s work focuses primarily on the figure, but recently she has been working in a more abstract style with watercolor and other media on Yupo paper.  Yupo is a smooth, erasable, synthetic paper accommodating several types of media, as well as being a suitable surface for printmaking processes.  It produces great textural and spacial effects, along with allowing color to stay vibrant due to the paint laying on the surface of the paper.  This lends itself well with the way Kathy works-expressively, gestural, and with vibrant colors, evoking strong mood and emotion.
